Dogs entering the UK must follow strict quarantine regulations outlined by DEFRA (the government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). Please contact DEFRA or visit their website for full information on the quarantine procedures. Below is some information about the UK Pet Travel Scheme from the DEFRA website. It is the responsibility of each and every competitor to ensure they follow the exact order of these regulations to ensure their dog is eligible for entry into the UK. DEFRA will reject dogs at the border if these procedures are not followed precisely and in the prescribed order. If in doubt, speak to DEFRA directly.

The procedures for the UK Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

  • Have your dog microchipped
Before any of the other procedures for PETS are carried out, your dog must be fitted with a microchip so that it can be properly identified.
  • Have your dog vaccinated
After the microchip has been fitted your dog must be vaccinated against rabies. There is no exemption to this requirement, even if your dog has a current rabies vaccination
  • Arrange a blood test
After your dog has been vaccinated, it must be blood tested to make sure that the vaccine has given it a satisfactory level of protection against rabies.

The six month rule for entry or re-entry to the UK

Your dog may not enter the UK under PETS until six calendar months have passed from the date that your vet took the blood sample which led to a satisfactory test result. Once the vet has issued the PETS documentation and that six month period has passed, the PETS documentation is valid for your dog to enter the UK.

  • Get PETS documentation
For dogs being prepared in an EU country, you should get an EU pet passport. If you are preparing your dog in a non-EU listed country you will need to obtain an official third country veterinary certificate although note that Croatia, Gibraltar, Norway, San Marino and Switzerland are also issuing passports.
  • Before your dog enters the UK, it must be treated against ticks and a tapeworm
Your dog must be treated against ticks and tapeworms not less than 24 hours and not more than 48 hours before it is checked in with an approved transport company for its journey into the UK.
  • Arrange for your dog to travel with an approved transport company on an authorised route
Your dog must enter the UK from a listed country travelling with an approved transport company on an authorised route.

NOTE: DEFRA rules for countries not in the European Union (EU) and not one of the 'non-EU listed countries' are different and usually require the dog to undertake 6 calendar months of quarantine in the UK in a licensed quarantine facility. Please contact DEFRA directly for the appropriate rules for your country.
