Finals Day

The 2011 World Sheepdog Trial has drawn to a close with a nail-biting, edge-of-your seat day of competition. Irish eyes will certainly be smiling as James McGee and his bitch Becca (613 pts) put in a superlative run in the late stages of the day to deny Serge Van der Sweep and Eve (577 pts) of the Netherlands the victory after they had completed an excellent run earlier in the day. 2010 International Supreme Champions Michael Gallagher and Cap (565 pts) doubled the celebration for the Irish team and spectators as they took the third and final position on the podium.

First Day of Competition

The sun has been shining all day long and we are breaking out the sunscreen. The competition is running along quite smoothly. The sheep are in excellent condition and are running well on most fields. They have got a little heavier over the day and are turning on the dogs, especially at the pen. On field 2, the sheep are running exceptionally well with some top scores being recorded. The live feeds are working well, although we had a small glitch earlier in the day when we overloaded the system! The scores are coming up very quickly after a competitor's run has been completed. An big crowd here today. At the end of the day, we will summarize the top 7 from each field who will go forward to the semi-finals and get some photos up.

Updated News - Wednesday September 14th (4.35pm)

Competitors are assembling for the bus to Penrith for the start of the parade at 5pm. Much excitement! There is a lot of activity at the venue as the committee and a team of workers try to catch up with the site preparation. Many tents have still to be erected and people are working as fast as they can. The trial fields look terrific so everything is ready for the start of competition at 8am tomorrow morning. There have been a few changes to the dogs being run, as some handlers are opting to run their alternate dogs. The lists under Results --> Qualifying Days 1 and 2 are current as of 4pm this afternoon. An Alternate dog is designated by an (A).

Updated News - Wednesday September 14th (6.15am)

Looks like we'll see sunshine later today and tomorrow for the start of the 2011 World Sheep Dog Trials. Competitors will be on site today for registration and officials will be running through their duties in preparation for the competition. The local committee is still hard at work preparing the venue after Hurricane Katia left her mark. Today will see the parade lead by the Penrith Town Band who will be followed by a horse drawn carriage, driven by 19 times world champion George Bowman, and carrying the Earl and Countess of Lonsdale. This will be followed by the 240 competing dogs and their handlers, carrying their national flags and as many as possible in national costume/uniform. The Parade starts at 5pm in Penrith. Don't forget the Hog Roast and Entertainment at 7pm at the venue.

Updated News - Tuesday September 13th (2.15pm)

Sun and blue skies have arrived in Cumbria. Perfect conditions now to dry out the venue a bit and give all those hard working committee members a welcome relief from the rain and high winds. The tailend of Hurricane Katia has left its mark, but it has not dented the resolve of all those working to stage this World Class event. Hats off this dedicated and hard working team.

Updated News - Tuesday September 13th (11am)

The World Trial is still ON! Four great days of competition will start Thursday come rain or shine. However, due to the severe damage sustained to many of the marquees in yesterday's storms, the Country Festival will now run Saturday and Sunday only. We apologise for this but the weather caused a lot of damage. Note also, the Auction has moved from Friday night to Saturday night. Same great prizes on which to bid!

Venue Preparations in Full Swing - Tuesday September 13th

After the storms of yesterday, venue preparation is in high speed mode today. If you can, please leave your visit to Lowther until Wednesday to allow the site to dry out as much as possible. The setup crews are working as fast as they can and, for safety reasons, we need to give them the space to do what needs to be done. The local committee is working extremely hard in trying conditions. Hats off to them!

Temporary Venue Closure - Monday September 12th.

The WT venue is very wet at the moment. We are asking that people do not visit the grounds on Monday, and where possible, to not drive on the grounds until Wednesday to allow the grounds to dry out. Also, with the high winds and tents going up today, for safety reasons, we ask you refrain from visiting the site at the moment. If you are camping at the venue and can delay your arrival until after 2pm on Tuesday afternoon, please do so. The committee and stewards hope to be back on site at 9am tomorrow to continue the set up work for the Trials. All preparations are continuing as scheduled for an exciting opening to the event on Wednesday.

Souvenir Programme Correction and Omission

The Souvenir programme lists Chloe Cropper as the youngest competitor at the 2011 World Trial. Of course, it was 15-year -ld Robbie Welsh. Robbie made it to the semifinals. Well done, Robbie and apologies for the mistake. Robbie has been around 'so' long that we tend to forget just how young he is! Watch for this personable lad in the future. A rising star.

Please note a competitor's name has been omitted in the World Trial Souvenir Programme. Competitor 214, Michelle Brothers' name has been omitted. The dog information is there, just the handler's name was omitted. When you get your programmes, please add this. We sincerely apologise to the hurt this has caused Michelle Brothers and her family.

Parade Time

The time of the parade has moved from 4.30pm to 5pm. The parade will end approximately 6pm. The Hog Roast and Entertainment will start at 7pm on the Lowther Estate. Meal Tickets are £10 each per evening which includes both food and entertainment. A licensed bar is open until 11pm each evening. An updated Events Timetable can be found HERE. A detailed schedule of all the displays can be downloaded HERE (pdf file)
